Making a family dining area work in a compact Luxembourg apartment

Luxembourg apartments are planned efficiently on floor area, and the dining space is usually where that efficiency is felt first. Three measurements decide whether it works, and the school week decides how often it is used.

The measurements that settle it

A dining table needs roughly a metre behind each chair to be usable, plus a circulation route past it. That is the constraint people discover after the table is delivered.

Take three measurements at the viewing. The width of the dining zone, wall to wall or wall to circulation route. The position of every door opening into it, since each swing removes usable area. And the position of the radiators, because a table pushed against one blocks the heat in a heating season running roughly October to April.

Then work backwards. Four metres of open-plan width will not comfortably take a six-seat table and a walkway at the same time. A 140 cm round table seats four to five in less space than a rectangular equivalent and allows people to pass more easily.

How often it is actually used, which depends on the school week

The Luxembourg enseignement fondamental week has two shapes. In many schools the day runs from around 8:00 to 11:50, with afternoons from around 14:00 to 15:50 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Thursday mornings only. Timetables are set school by school.

On half days children return at midday and the table carries a proper lunch. On full days, many take a midday meal at the maison relais or service d'éducation et d'accueil, which typically provides a meal and activities, and the table carries only the evening.

That matters for the design: the dining area has to work as a midday table for children twice a week, and as an evening table for the household on the other days. A surface that only functions when fully set is the wrong choice.

The second job: homework and everything else

In most compact Luxembourg apartments the dining table is also the homework table, the project table and occasionally the work table. That is not a failure of planning; it is what the floor area produces.

The consequence is that it needs storage immediately adjacent. A sideboard, a shelf run or a bench with storage under it, so that the surface can be cleared in one movement rather than by carrying things to another room. Clearing that requires a journey does not happen on a Tuesday evening.

Choose a surface that tolerates being written on and wiped. This sounds trivial and it determines whether the table gets used for homework at all.

Light, which is the difference between used and avoided

The sun sets before half past four in late December and a large share of days between November and February are overcast. A dining area lit by a single ceiling fitting is unpleasant for two of those hours.

Check what exists at the viewing: how many ceiling points, where the sockets are, and whether the dining zone has any switched socket for a lamp. Unfurnished Luxembourg lettings frequently come with bare fixtures or none.

A pendant over the table plus one other source at a different height transforms the space. Anything wired requires the landlord's consent in a rental, and in an owned apartment anything touching the building's common systems requires the general assembly's authorisation, so keep additions to plug-in fittings unless you have written permission.

Seating that suits a small room

A bench on one side takes less depth than chairs, seats children more flexibly, and can hold storage underneath. It also removes the metre of clearance that would be needed behind chairs on that side, which is frequently the measurement that makes a compact dining area work.

Chairs that stack or that can be moved to another use are worth more than a matching set in an apartment where the same square metres do several jobs.

Avoid anything that only works when the table is extended. An extendable table is useful; a room that only functions in its extended state is not.

Noise, which is worse at a table than anywhere else

Hard floors, a hard table and hard walls make a family meal loud, and in converted Luxembourg buildings with timber floors that noise also travels to the neighbours below.

A rug under the table, felt pads on every chair leg and a soft surface on one wall change the room considerably. They also reduce the most common source of neighbour complaints in this housing stock, where enforcement runs through the syndic to the owner and then to you.

Permitted hours for noisy activity are set by each commune's règlement général de police and are not identical across the country, so check your own commune rather than relying on general advice.

What to check before signing

Four things at the viewing, none of which appears in a listing. The dining zone width and the door swings. The radiator positions. The socket positions and ceiling points. And the walk from the kitchen to the table, since a dining area separated from the kitchen by a corridor changes how a weekday evening runs.

Then check the storage that will serve it: the longest uninterrupted wall adjacent to the dining zone, and the size of the cave, measured rather than described.

Three questions we are asked

Round or rectangular? Round in a compact room, because it seats the same number in less space and allows circulation past it. Rectangular where the room is long and narrow.

Is an island a substitute? For breakfast and for children's lunches, frequently yes. As the only surface it fails, because homework and a meal cannot share a worktop.

How much should the dining area influence the choice of apartment? More than people expect in a family household, because it is the room that does the most jobs. Measure it before the bedrooms.

Where the kitchen sits, and why it matters twice a week

The relationship between the kitchen and the table changes how a weekday runs more than the size of either.

On the two days a week when many Luxembourg schools finish at midday, the table is used for a proper lunch with children present. On the other days it carries only the evening. An open or adjacent kitchen means one adult can prepare and supervise at once; a kitchen separated by a corridor means choosing between the two.

Check the walk at the viewing, count the doors between the two spaces, and note whether the kitchen has any surface that could take a child sitting. Where the layout separates them, a small table or a counter position in the kitchen frequently resolves more than rearranging the dining room does.

Should the table be near a window? If the choice exists, yes. Homework and midday meals both happen there, and daylight makes the difference on the two days a week that end at noon.

What about an extendable table? Useful, provided the room works in the closed position. A room that only functions when the table is extended is the wrong room.

How does this affect the choice of apartment? Measure the dining zone before the bedrooms. In a family household it is the room that does the most jobs, and it is the one most often compromised by an efficient layout.
