Vianden is the picture that appears when people search for Luxembourg, and unlike most such pictures it holds up in person. A restored hilltop castle above a river town in a narrow valley, with a chairlift to a viewpoint, a house where Victor Hugo lived in exile and a set of walks along the Our that lead directly into Germany. It is an hour from Luxembourg City and it is the outing to give to visiting parents.

Vianden and the Our valley: the castle in the north

Getting there

The castle

Vianden Castle is a substantial fortified residence of eleventh to fourteenth-century origin, occupying the ridge above the town. It fell into ruin in the nineteenth century and was extensively restored from the 1970s onward, which means what you see is a reconstruction of a great deal of what was lost, done carefully.

The interior runs through a sequence of halls, chapels and chambers with the fortifications and the valley views throughout. It takes an unhurried hour to ninety minutes.

The chairlift and the viewpoint

A chairlift runs from the valley floor up the opposite slope to a viewpoint and a café, and it gives the classic view back at the castle on its ridge. It is short, it is not frightening, and it is the best photograph in the country.

From the top there are marked walking trails along the ridge, which is the way to turn a two-hour visit into a proper day out.

The town

Vianden is a tourist town and makes no secret of it. The restaurants along the main street are geared to visitors and priced accordingly; the food improves as you move away from the castle approach.

The valley, and the walking

The Our valley is the reason to stay longer than the castle takes. The river marks the German border for much of its length, and the surrounding Oesling is the upland part of Luxembourg: steeper, wooded and considerably emptier than the south.

Combining it

Vianden alone is a half day. To make a full one, add one of the following.

With children

This is one of the better family days in Luxembourg. The castle is a castle, the chairlift is a chairlift, and there is a river at the bottom. The constraints are the slope, the car park in summer and the fact that the town's restaurants fill at one o'clock.

The combination that works is castle in the morning, lunch in the town, chairlift and a short walk in the afternoon. Reverse it if the weather is better later.

Staying the night

Vianden works as a day trip and it is better as an overnight, particularly for anyone who wants to walk.

For visiting family, two nights in the north is the itinerary we suggest most often, and it consistently surprises people who assumed Luxembourg was a city with a small country attached.

Three questions we are asked about Vianden

Is it too touristy?

It is the most visited site in the country and on an August Sunday it feels like it. Go on a weekday, out of season, or early, and it is a different place. The valley walks are quiet even when the town is not.

Can we do it without a car?

Yes, by train and bus, free within Luxembourg, at the cost of a longer journey and less flexibility at the end of the day. For a family with young children the car is easier.

Is the castle worth it in winter?

The castle is largely indoors and the valley in snow or mist is at its most atmospheric. The chairlift and some facilities run reduced schedules outside the season, so check before travelling.

Why we write these

The north of the country is where Luxembourg stops feeling small, and most people who move here take two years to discover it. It is forty minutes from the capital.

A useful way to test the castle is to run a normal-day scenario. For the question raised by “The castle”, the useful detail is not a generic list of advantages.

For the town, note what you can see, what you can measure, what you need to ask and what would be expensive to change. For the question raised by “The castle”, the useful detail is not a generic list of advantages.

For the chairlift and the viewpoint, measurement is often more revealing than opinion. For the question raised by “The chairlift and the viewpoint”, the useful detail is not a generic list of advantages.

A useful editorial test for staying the night is to look at the consequence rather than the headline feature.

Editorial note: Opening hours, prices, timetables and seasonal arrangements change, and several of the places described here operate reduced schedules outside the summer. Check directly with the site, the museum or the operator before travelling. Public transport is free within Luxembourg; journeys continuing across the border require a ticket for the section beyond the frontier.
