It is the most common arrangement here and the one most likely to degrade, for four reasons that are all addressable. The alternative is not a spare room; it is a better version of the same table.
Why it degrades
Four causes, in order of impact.
Setting up and clearing. Where equipment has to be fetched and returned each day, the effort is paid twice daily and the arrangement collapses within weeks.
The chair. A dining chair is designed for forty-five minutes. Eight hours in one produces back and neck problems that no other adjustment compensates for.
Light. Dining areas are lit for the evening, with a pendant over the table. That is the wrong light for a screen and for documents.
Sound. An open dining area is the least acoustically controlled space in most apartments, which shows up on every call.
The equipment box, which solves the first cause
One container, adjacent to the table, holding everything: laptop stand, keyboard, mouse, charger, notebook, headphones. Setting up becomes one movement rather than five.
Where it lives is the entire point. A box in a bedroom means the arrangement fails. A box on a shelf within arm's reach of the table means it survives.
Measure the wall adjacent to the dining zone at the viewing, since that is where the shelf or sideboard has to go. In Luxembourg apartments planned efficiently on floor area, that adjacent wall is frequently the missing element rather than the table itself.
The chair, which is not negotiable
Buy a proper task chair and accept that it will be visible in the dining area. This is the single change with the largest effect on whether the arrangement is sustainable, and it is the one most often deferred.
Where the chair must not remain in the room, a folding task chair stored beside the table is a compromise. A dining chair with a cushion is not.
Screen height, which is the second half of the same problem
A laptop on a table puts the screen far below eye level, which is what produces neck strain regardless of the chair.
A stand and a separate keyboard cost little and resolve it. Both fit in the equipment box, which is why the box and the chair should be bought together rather than separately.
Where an external monitor is used, it has to live somewhere when the table is a table. A shelf on the adjacent wall is the usual answer, which again comes back to the wall run.
Light, and the two conditions it has to serve
The pendant over a dining table is positioned and dimmed for the evening. For work you need light on the documents and no reflection on the screen, which usually means a task lamp on the table rather than a change to the ceiling fitting.
Between November and February a large share of days are overcast and the sun sets before half past four in late December, so a working day here ends in artificial light for five months. Position the table so daylight arrives from the side rather than in front of or behind the screen.
Check the socket positions at the viewing. A table with no socket within reach becomes a table with a lead across a walkway, and anything wired requires the landlord's consent in a rental and, in an owned apartment, frequently the general assembly's authorisation for anything touching common systems.
Acoustics, which matter on every call
An open dining area with hard surfaces is a live room, and it makes you sound distant to everyone on the call.
A rug under the table, felt pads on every chair leg, curtains hung outside the reveal so they clear the glass when open, and a bookcase or soft surface on one wall. In the converted Luxembourg stock with timber floors, the rug and the felt pads also reduce what the neighbours below hear, which matters because complaints run from the syndic to the owner and then to the tenant.
What is behind you on camera
Orient the table so the camera faces a wall rather than a window, since a window behind you puts you in silhouette, particularly in winter when the interior is darker than the sky.
Check what else is in frame: the kitchen, a drying rack, a doorway with household traffic. Turning the seating position ninety degrees usually resolves all three at once, and it is a decision taken once rather than managed daily.
The end-of-day reset
The arrangement survives when the table returns to being a table in under two minutes, which requires the storage to be adjacent and nothing else.
This matters more in a household with children, since in many Luxembourg schools the day runs from around 8:00 to 11:50 with afternoons on Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, meaning the table is needed at midday twice a week as well as in the evening.
Three questions we are asked
Is it viable long term? With the equipment box, a task chair and a screen stand, yes for two or three days a week. Five days a week in a household with others present is considerably harder.
Should I choose an apartment with a study instead? If it exists at the right price. A well-equipped dining table generally outperforms a dark box room, so compare on light and wall run rather than on the room count.
How many days a week can I work from home? If you are a cross-border worker, that is partly a tax and social security question rather than a preference, with a fiscal threshold of 34 days a year for France and Belgium and a separate social threshold of 49.9% of working time. Check your own position with your employer.
Three questions we are asked
What should I buy first? The task chair, then the laptop stand and keyboard, then the equipment box. In that order, because the chair is the item whose absence causes physical problems rather than inconvenience.
Does a standing arrangement help? For part of the day, and a table at dining height is the wrong height for standing. A separate riser on the table is the practical version in an apartment where a second desk is not possible.
How do I stop it taking over the room? The adjacent storage and the two-minute reset. Everything else follows from whether the table can become a table again without a journey.
What to check at a viewing
Five things determine whether a dining table can carry a working week, and none is in a listing.
The wall adjacent to the dining zone, which is where the equipment box and any shelf have to go. The socket positions within reach of the table. The direction daylight arrives from, since it should come from the side rather than in front of or behind a screen. The number of doors opening into the space and the circulation route through it. And thirty seconds of silence with the window closed, at the seating position.
An apartment where the dining zone has no adjacent wall and no socket cannot support this arrangement, whatever its floor area.
