Kirchberg, Luxembourg City. The financial and European plateau, with the tram running its full length.
Kirchberg is the plateau north-east of the old town, built from the 1960s onwards around the European institutions and since expanded into the country's banking, university and cultural district. Residential buildings sit alongside offices, the concert hall, the contemporary art museum, the national sports centre and the university campus.

The quarter holds one of the largest shopping centres in the country, with a hypermarket, high-street retail and services under one roof, plus supermarkets and bakeries spread across the residential streets.
Kirchberg is part of the commune of Luxembourg City, with the Bierger-Center in the Ville Haute reachable directly by tram. Banks, insurers and professional services are, by definition, on the doorstep.
Medical practices, a hospital, crèches, international schools, gyms and the Coque sports and swimming complex are all within the quarter, which is one of the reasons it works for households as well as for commuters.
The T1 tram runs the full length of the plateau from Luxexpo through the university and the institutions and on to Hamilius, the central station and Cloche d'Or. The funicular at Rout Bréck-Pafendall connects down to the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station, and Findel airport is minutes away by bus or car.
Evenings on Kirchberg are cultural rather than nocturnal: concerts, exhibitions and cinema, with restaurants around the institutions and the shopping centre. The valley quarters are a short tram or funicular ride away.
The Parc Central and the park around the Dräi Eechelen fort give the plateau two large green spaces, and the paths down into the Alzette valley connect to Clausen and Pfaffenthal on foot.
Every quarter below belongs to the commune of Luxembourg City, the country's largest commune and the one that handles registration, waste, resident parking and communal services for all of the districts we let in.
Public transport is free everywhere in Luxembourg, so the only cost of a commute from here is time. The journey times below are approximate and depend on the service and the time of day.
